Shirobasti in Ayurveda: Oil Crown Therapy for Mind & Nervous System Healing
What is Shirobasti?
Shirobasti is a classical Ayurvedic therapy where medicated oils are retained on the head inside a specially designed cap for a specific duration. The term “Shiro” means head, and “Basti” means retention or containment.
This deeply nourishing and therapeutic procedure works on the nervous system, brain, and sense organs, making it an ideal treatment for mental, neurological, and psychosomatic disorders.
Unlike Shirodhara, where oil is poured continuously over the forehead, in Shirobasti the oil is kept stagnant on the scalp, allowing maximum absorption and healing at a deeper level.
How is Shirobasti Performed?
- Preparation:
- The patient is seated comfortably.
- A leather or specially designed cylindrical cap (open at both ends) is placed securely around the head and sealed with dough to prevent leakage.
- Medicated, lukewarm oil is gently poured into this cap until it fills to a specific level.
- Retention Time:
- The oil is kept on the head for 30–60 minutes, depending on the individual’s condition.
- During this time, the oil penetrates the scalp and nourishes the brain and nerves.
- Completion:
- Oil is carefully removed.
- The head is wiped and washed with lukewarm water or a prescribed herbal decoction.
- A soothing head massage may follow.
