Karnapurana in Ayurveda: Therapeutic Ear Oil Treatment for Better Hearing & Balance

Karnapurana in Ayurveda: Therapeutic Ear Oil Treatment for Better Hearing & Balance

What is Karnapurana?

Karnapurana is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves gently pouring warm medicated oil into the ears. The Sanskrit word Karna means ear, and Purana means filling. It is a part of Dinacharya (daily routine) as well as a therapeutic procedure used for treating various ear and nervous system disorders.

The ear is considered a gateway to Vata dosha, and this therapy helps pacify excess Vata, relieve stiffness, improve hearing, and promote mental calmness.

How is Karnapurana Performed?

  1. Preparation:
    • The patient is made to lie comfortably on one side.
    • The ears and surrounding area are gently massaged with warm oil to stimulate circulation.
  2. Oil Administration:
    • Warm medicated oil is slowly poured into one ear canal using a dropper or cotton wick.
    • The oil is retained in the ear for 5–10 minutes.
  3. Aftercare:
    • The oil is allowed to drain out naturally or gently wiped.
    • The procedure is repeated on the other ear.
    • A short head massage may be given to promote relaxation.
